Hi, we are using the JS220. Its a great tool, so well done!
However I am struggling to get a smooth output from it. Using the Joulescope software (or running the code from Github), Waveform that comes in pauses about every second. I.e. it is not smooth. I have gone through all setting, memory, opengl, sample rates etc but nothing seems to effects the regular pause…
I don’t recall seeing this on my previous computers running Win10
Any pointers?
I have a fairly new I7 machine with 32Gb RAM running Windows 11…
I’ve updated graphics drivers. Done a clean restart.
Hi @KK123 - The Waveform widget should be smooth any ony modern Windows computer with a graphics card. Older integrated Intel graphics is a known issue, but newer integrated Intel graphics works great.
Let’s see if we can figure out the issue:
Is this machine a laptop? If it is a laptop, plug it into the power adapter. Also inspect the power settings.
Ensure that your Joulescope is connected directly to a USB port on your host computer. Do not use any hubs, docks or adapters.
If you have any other USB devices connected to the same USB root hub, disconnect them for this test. We want to make sure some other USB device communication is not the cause.
Take a look at Windows power settings
Start the Joulescope UI, select File → Clear config and exit. This reverts the UI to default settings.
Start the Joulescope UI, select View → Oscilloscope.
Does the Waveform widget animate smoothly? If it runs smoothly, great! If not, please select Help → Report Issue. In the issue report. please provide the URL for this forum post. This report will give us more information that may be useful.
I have tried all the above… However I have just managed to get my antivirus turned off and that seems to be the culprit. We use Sophos Endpoint and the Real Time File scanning seems to be causing the continuous pause. It is great I’ve isolated the cause, however I am not sure how to get around it. IT policy will required scanning to continue… I guess I could try exclude Joulescope from the scanning…
However I am not recording anything to file as far as I know? What file read/write will be happening when running the joulescope?
The Joulescope UI does write a log to disk, but it should be relatively small. You can select Help → View logs… in the UI to open the log path in Windows File Explorer.
The UI also renders themes and icons to disk, but only when you switch views or add widgets.
That’s all. It does buffer all the incoming data to RAM, about 15 MB/s. If Sophos is trying to scan RAM, that could be a problem.
For what its worth, we do run the joulescope.exe for each Joulescope UI release through VirusTotal. Here are the results for 1.3.4 (latest).
