I own two joullescopes. One will connect to any computer I use, The other one will only work with some computers. This is very frustrating and I’ve checked drivers. Plug one in, works fine, other one, doesn’t work.
Hi @Madgetech_1 and welcome to the Joulescope forum!
I have a few questions to help figure out what is happening:
- Which Joulescope versions do you own: JS110, JS220, or JS320?
- What is the host operating system?
- What does the USB-side status LED indicate after you plug in the Joulescope and after you start the UI?
They are both JS220’s. I use windows 11 Pro. The USB-side status LED goes blue when i plug it in.
Great! Blue means that both Joulescopes are being enumerated by Windows.
A few more questions:
- When you start the Joulescope UI, do they both turn green on the misbehaving computer setup?
- Are you plugging these Joulescopes directly into the host computer? Avoid USB hubs, docks, and adapters. Unpowered USB hubs are particularly problematic for the JS110 and JS220 which only run down to 4.8 V or so. The JS320 can run down to 4 V, but it still takes most of a single USB 2 port of power.
We have had other drivers claim Joulescopes on Windows for unknown reasons. Joulescopes automatically request the built-in WinUSB driver using Microsoft OS Descriptors, but software can override this. Once overridden, Windows “remembers” it for that device. You can try out this PowerShell script to restore the default drivers:
On the working scope both lights go green when UI is started. On the scope that doesn’t work the rear led stays blue and the front does not light at all when UI started.
I am plugging directly into the pc. I’ll have to try the script later today. Thanks for the quick response.
